How the Airport Shirt Exchange Works: Rules, Variants and Timing

The airport shirt exchange is a group-trip tradition where every person secretly buys a ridiculous shirt for one other person, the shirts are revealed at the airport, and everyone wears the shirt they were given for an agreed part of the journey. There is no official rulebook. Below are the rules most groups use, the variants worth knowing, and when to order so the shirts arrive before you fly.

The seven rules most groups use

  1. One shirt per person, one budget. Set a cap, usually $20 to $30. Matched budgets keep every shirt equally ridiculous.

  2. Draw names in secret. Everyone buys for exactly one person, and nobody knows who bought theirs until the reveal. Use our free name-draw tool so the organizer cannot see the pairs either.

  3. Collect sizes first. A shirt that does not fit ends the bit before it starts. Sizes go in the group chat; the shirts stay secret. When in doubt, order one size up.

  4. Reveal at the airport, after check-in. You get the photo, a bathroom to change in, and the full walk through the terminal.

  5. Agree on the wearing window before anyone shops. Until boarding, the whole flight, until hotel check-in, or the full first day. Say it out loud; the negotiation always reopens at the gate.

  6. No jackets, no take-backs. Covering the shirt is the only way to cheat, so it is banned.

  7. One group photo at the gate. It is the point of the whole thing and the photo everyone looks at a year later.

Variants

  • Classic: t-shirts only, one per person, revealed at the gate.

  • Full outfit swap: shirt plus pants, hat or sunglasses. Louder, better photos, more luggage.

  • Couples: two people dress each other for travel day. No draw needed.

  • Family: kid-safe designs only, and the kids pick for the adults. They will choose worse than you would.

  • Cruise: exchange on embarkation day, wear until dinner.

  • Return-leg: travel out like normal people and do the exchange on the way home, when nobody has the energy to be embarrassed.

  • Bachelor or bachelorette: one person gets the terrible shirt, the rest of the party coordinates.

Keep it airline-legal

Airlines reserve the right to refuse passengers whose clothing is lewd, offensive or obscene, and crews apply that at their discretion. Never joke about weapons, bombs, drugs or security anywhere near an airport. Skip anything aimed at a person's body and anything a child in the row behind cannot read. Every Gate Swap design is built inside those lines, which is why the embarrassment is the shirt's job, not the gate agent's.

When to order

Shirts are printed to order and ship in 2 to 5 business days, plus transit. Order at least 10 days before departure for US addresses and 3 weeks for international. The organizer should run the name draw two weeks before the trip so everyone has time to shop. Before major travel holidays, order dates are posted on the homepage.
